The story of Shop Cleveland Market started with some inspiration, a launch party, and a dream (literally).
My inspiration was my older sister, Irina. She started her own business in January of 2015, withSimplicity, where she makes botanical makeup and skin care. Seeing Irina take her passion and turn it into a shop made me realize that by shopping small and handmade, I am supporting people that are just like her; people with lives, families, and ambition. It builds a community by keeping money in the backyard, and you get to know whose products you are actually using! I became obsessed with the shop small movement and the connections with locals that I made.
This launch party I was invited to was for an amazing venue. It was some VIP party, and I honestly just went for fun. Being a stay at home mom, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get out of the house. Needless to say, I am so glad I went.
That night, I had a dream. I just couldn’t get that space out of my head. I was so incredibly inspired by that venue and had hundreds of ideas of what I could do with it. One thing lead to another, and then it hit me.
My passion for shopping small and handmade turned into an idea bigger than what I thought I could take on. However, God made a way, and Shop Cleveland Market was born. Coordinating this show where the best small businesses of Cleveland are able to come together and be recognized in the way they deserve created an atmosphere where people could know and be known. It became more about connection and less about selling. This event fulfilled me in a way I could never imagine. It was such a rush to have my first attempt be so successful. While I started Shop Cleveland Market to help the community around me, I personally received so much love and support from both vendors and customers. That alone inspired me to run with SCM and book it for the next year to do it all over again.
I have learned that people like to support people. Small Business is more than just selling a product; it relies so heavily on connection. Connection with the product, customers, and the community.
